In a recent survey by Just Eat for Business, researchers discovered that 22% of UK office workers are unable to take time off due to staff shortages.
To prevent burnout, experts advise employers to prioritise annual leave and adopt healthy working practices.
According to the same survey, the majority of workers (60 per cent) believe their manager openly discourages them from taking time off, and one in ten feel unable to request mental health leave.
This lack of yearly leave is concerning given that the survey also found that 44% of workers feel highly burned out and that 33% consider trying to maintain a healthy work-life balance to be the most difficult aspect of work.
Even though we have a legal right to annual leave, many employees in business settings feel bad about taking it. Furthermore, senior leaders and colleagues regularly compliment this behaviour and misinterpret it as an indication of a person’s dedication to the organisation, which only serves to exacerbate the situation.
What can your business do, then, to encourage employees to use their annual leave?
• Clearly state your policy.
• Encourage holiday conversations at work.
• Actively promote taking annual leave.
• Make scheduling time off from work straightforward.
