Benefits of having plants at work

The benefits of having more greenery on your desk have been demonstrated in numerous scientific research projects.

So why are they so beneficial?

Increased productivity

According to research by the University of Exeter, employees productivity can increase by up to 15% when sharing their workspace with house plants.  Having just one plant per square meter can help improve memory retention and other basic skills.

Help reduce stress

According to a study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, active interaction with indoor plants (like touching and smelling) can reduce physiological and psychological stress.

They can help boost creativity

Office plants can inspire you whether you’re running out of ideas or have been working on the same one for too long.  It’s well known that engaging our senses may increase the flow of inspiration, so spending some time to figuratively smell the flowers can help you get out of a rut.

They can help reduce noise level

Plants help to reduce the distracting effects of background office chatter by absorbing sounds rather than insulating against noise pollution. According to a 1995 paper by researchers at London South Bank University, placing larger plant pots in multiple locations along the edges and corners of a room has a significant positive impact.

They can make the workplace more attractive

Did you know that nearly half of all employees work in an environment with no natural light, and one out of every five people said their office has no natural elements?

Employers can bring some nature inside and increase the attractiveness of the space by introducing plants into the office building.

They can purify the air

Certain plants, such as Peace Lilies, Devil’s Ivy, and Spider Plants, are known air purifiers and may benefit the air within the office. While recent research suggests that plants cannot solve all of the issues associated with office air quality, they can help alleviate some of the burden.
