In-house or outsourced HR, what is the answer?

There is a lot of discussion over whether firms require an in-house HR department and how effective an HR department is compared to outsourcing. Is there really an optimal solution, with HR becoming increasingly complex and time-consuming, and HR professionals being forced to wear many different hats and be experts in legislation and best practise?

Many HR tasks can be delegated to a third-party provider. Payroll, recruitment, investigations, and keeping management information such as new hires, departures, sickness, and vacations up to date are all services that can be outsourced. This frees up line managers to focus on supporting a company’s most valuable asset: its workers. Upskilling, coaching, mentoring, focusing on improving sales, and solidifying a high-performance culture are all actions that line managers should consider.

Having an in-house HR person or department, on the other hand, can help to maintain a consistent approach in areas like leadership, enhancing the employer brand, bridging communication gaps, and establishing relationships across the organisation.

Employees are most concerned about the lack of in-house HR personnel, especially when it comes to day-to-day HR queries and face-to-face communication.

So is outsourcing HR services the way to go?

Outsourced HR services are becoming increasingly popular. Why? HR is a lot more complicated than it used to be, and many firms are feeling overwhelmed by the expectations and intricacies of HR. Businesses are realising that they need to be compliant now more than ever, that they need help hiring the best people for their organisation, that they need help establishing pay packages – the list goes on!

Having access to HR consultants on a project or ad-hoc basis provides firms with the flexibility that many modern businesses want. Businesses can focus on business strategy by outsourcing part or all of their HR responsibilities to third-party companies.

What the statics say

According to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), who carried out a survey from hundreds of businesses on their outsourcing practices, found the six most common reasons for outsourcing are:

• 26% of companies outsource to save money

• 23% of companies outsource to focus on strategy

• 22% of companies outsource to improve compliance

• 18% of companies outsource to improve accuracy

• 18% of companies outsource due to a lack of experience in-house

• 18% of companies outsource to take advantage of technological advances

Make sure you carefully select your HR provider?

A reliable partner can provide HR support that is both accessible and economical. If you decide to outsource your HR, whether you’re a large corporation or a tiny emerging company, make sure you do your homework beforehand. The supplier or providers you select must have applicable industry accreditations and be CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) accredited or accredited in the field you want to outsource.

Outsourcing human resources appears to make sense for smaller firms since they gain access to full-time guidance and support at a fraction of the cost; this reduces operating costs and allows the company to focus on its people and growth.

Enterprises have two major challenges: compliance and risk management. Because larger organisations are more likely to face legal liability as a result of their operations, outsourcing is typically utilised for more specific or project-based demands.

On balance, there appears to be a demand for outsourced HR. In-house HR is preferred by enterprise firms, with outsourced HR used for project, ad-hoc, or specialised services. Smaller emerging organisations appear to prefer the outsourced path, opting for a more generalist range of HR services, which provides the flexibility needed in the early phases of a growing company.
