Take this week to reflect on this and take action to promote equal opportunities within your business.
Sadly, discrimination is still widely experienced, and many organisations are not doing enough to protect the rights of their workforce, or the rights of those applying to join their workforce. Ensuring your workplace encourages equality, diversity and inclusion can help to make your place of work more successful, providing a better service to your clients and customers with the ability to serve a more diverse range of customers. You will be able to attract and retain a more productive and talented workforce. Your staff will be happier for it, and you will prevent legal issues from arising from bullying and harassment.
The first thing you will need to ensure your workplace encourages equality, diversity and inclusion is an equal opportunities policy. A well written policy will ensure that everyone knows what is expected of them and that the business will support and treat everyone fairly. It will ensure people are informed of the law and their rights and will include procedures for resolving issues. The second thing businesses need to do, is to ensure that suitable training is given to Line Managers on the proper implementation of the policy. Without the proper training, a policy is just words on a page and will not be impactful or helpful.
