Home-working Parents: Please Don’t Apologise for Noises in the Background

As anyone who regularly works from home knows, working remotely comes with a plethora of its own challenges. This could be problems with technology, issues with communication between employees or even adopting poor eating habits.

However, in the wake of a nation-wide ‘lockdown’ and with schools and businesses closing their doors around the UK, not only do employees need to adapt to home-working but juggling home-schooling as well. As this is a very extreme circumstance, employers should be more lenient and understanding when it comes to any potential minor disruption.

With schools not having the ability to teach in classrooms anymore, parents will have to balance (or juggle!) their professional work with their children’s schoolwork and activities. Each person’s circumstances will be different, and many households will not have the space or equipment to cater to both parents and children working from home every day, and so we are to expect some disruption.

Virtual messaging platforms and video conferencing are excellent tools for keeping colleagues connected and ensuring business runs as smoothly as possible. However, working parents with children in the house may find it more difficult to complete professional conference calls in peace and quiet. Whether it is children fighting over crayons, laughing at the TV or asking for help with schoolwork, we are expecting to hear something from them. Try not to apologise for this, as we are all in the same boat at the moment, trying to get by day-by-day in a situation that is out of everyone’s control.
