At Aspire Cambridge, we would like to look at the new legislation stating that parents of premature babies will now be given an extra 12 weeks paid leave, on top of their current allowance.
The new policy will see parents of sick children given statutory paid leave of around £160 a week while a child is in neonatal care for up to 12 weeks, in addition to their current maternity or paternity allowance. This new policy will be available to all parents with a newborn child in care for more than one week. This allows parents to not only take the time off to spend with their child in hospital, but to then enjoy the same amount of time with their newborn out of hospital as any other parents.
Currently, parents of premature children are not entitled to any extra leave. This can lead to them often spending the majority of their statutory leave with their child in hospital. The government estimates around 40,000 children spend more than a week in neonatal care. This policy could legitimately decrease the amount of stress that parents of premature children already go through, on top of worrying about running out of maternity or paternity leave.
If you need some advice on your current parental leave policies and would like a free consultation with one of our HR professionals, call us on 01223 855441.
