You’ll be getting lots and lots of calls from recruiters and some of these you will miss so you need to make sure your voicemail is set up to make that great impression of you, on your behalf.
We all get loads of sales calls, telemarketers and other ‘Unknown Callers’ trying to phone us and it is only normal that we hear our mobile phones going off, look to see who is phoning, see ‘caller unknown’ flash up and we let it ring out. After all, they can leave a message if it’s important.
But what if it is important? What if that call is the recruiter of your dream job? While you have carried on merrily with what you are doing, the recruiter is listening to your voicemail. What may seem a funny voicemail to friends and family, perhaps a more professional answer machine message would be more suitable for your potential future employer?

What Type of Voicemail?
The best voicemail you can have is one of you, the real you – not the one with the robot that says “You have reached the voicemail of (you saying your name), please leave a message after the tone.” Instead create your own voicemail so you say exactly what the robot would have said.
This means the recruiter or employer gets to experience a little bit of you; they get to hear your personality, voice and style. They get to hear your tone of voice and this can be really important for many job opportunities.
You need to make sure your voicemail is clear and concise, while sharing your personality. You need to speak professionally and when recording your voicemail imagine you are talking to the recruiter.
Listen To Your Voicemails
While this may sound completely obvious, sadly it needs to be said. If someone has gone to the effort of leaving you a voicemail then listen to it. While you may be keen to call back the missed call immediately, the recruitment consultant may have left a message for you asking you to call back with essential information, so when you call back without you then you’re wasting both parties time.
There are times when we have left 2 or even 3 messages for a potential candidate and then 3 weeks later they call back to say they have just heard our message; in the meantime we presumed the candidate was not interested and the job vacancy has now been filled.
Make sure you listen to your voicemails at least once a day and even if the job they are telling you about isn’t off interest, call the recruitment consultant back and tell them as there could be another job on their desk that you are perfect for.
