If you’re job hunting we don’t need to tell you how difficult it is to stand out, especially when you’re applying for roles in a competitive industry. However, there are things that you can do to boost your job application and help you stand out from the other applicants that may have the same qualifications as you, or sometimes even better than your qualifications.
Show that you’re Brilliant
Everyone can say they are brilliant, but very few can show that they are brilliant. Why not complete a relevant portfolio to showcase your skills by cherry-picking some of the best work you have done and work that shows off the broad range of skills you can offer to a company.
Prove that you’re Brilliant
Include testimonials in your CV or add them as a separate document; these could be testimonials from a client that have been emailed to you or even testimonials that you have collected on Linkedin. Make sure that the person that wrote your testimonial is happy for you to use it in this way and they may be called by your potential employer who wants to check out if you really are as good as they say.
Back Up Your Brilliance
If you have the time then complete an example piece of work for the company, imagining that you already have the job. You would need to research the company fully and see what sort of project you would work on and then show this; it is time-consuming so we recommend you do only do this if you’re desperate to work for that company and know it will be competitive.
Be Your Brilliant Self
Hiring managers and employers are used to seeing the standard buzz-words on a CV that can be seen on every CV; being a robot in a suit is not going to make you very memorable, so be you and include your personality in your CV and you, along with your CV, will stick in your recruiters mind.
Tailor It Brilliantly
We are always telling candidates to tailor their application and CV to the job they are applying for; while this time can be time-consuming it is something we highly recommend. An all-encompassing CV can be too detailed with information that isn’t relevant for the job role. Use your common sense and think about what the hiring manager wants to know and make this clear for them to see.
Research Them Brilliantly
Showing in your application that you already know the company beforehand will show the hiring manager that you really care about the job and that you are proactive. It puts you a step ahead from the other candidates and shows initiative as well as authenticity.
