Paternity legislation was bought into play to allow fathers time with their new bundle of joy! This time off allows bonding time with their baby and looking after the mother following birth – however the world of paternity leave is still pretty tricky to manage and understand for some business owners and that is why we have created this blog post to help you.
To ensure that your business is prepared for paternity leave you need to have a paternity policy and procedure in place that is readily available to your employees. You also need to ensure that same sex partners are aware of their rights to take paternity leave if they chose to do so.
All employees taking paternity leave are entitled to take either 1 week or 2 consecutive weeks’ leave. The amount of time is the same even if they have more than one child (eg twins).
It is also important that you make employees aware of their right to shared parental leave. You must also review, amend and change your policies as laws and regulations can change in regards to paternity pay, normally annually.
Unilever is known as a company with one of the most generous policies when it comes to paternity pay, being one of the only larger companies to offer two weeks full pay to fathers on paternity leave, instead of the statutory amount (currently£148.68 per week or 90% of their average weekly earnings, whichever is lower). Further to offering this very generous pay to fathers on paternity leave the company was awarded top marks by Mumsnet at their Family Friendly Awards.
Being well known as a company that cares about its employees is an excellent way to attract talent to your company, but it will also help you retain the talent in your business. It is important to consider this when creating a paternity leave policy and procedure.
If you would like an objective point of view from an experienced third party to ensure you are offering your employees the best or at least in line with the current employment law when it comes to paternity leave then please contact us – we’re only a phone call away.
