A Guide To The Perfect Job Interview Presentation

Very few candidates are offered a job at first interview, often a second interview will take place and this can sometimes be where a candidate is asked to perform a presentation. This is a great chance to show off your communication skills, your personality and your overall understanding of an industry or sector.

But, this presentation could make or break your interview and the chance of employment with the company so it is important that you know how to properly plan and conduct your perfect job interview presentation; and that is what this guide will help you with.

Who’s Watching?

Make sure you know who your audience will be, ask the recruiter or hiring manager and then have a snoop online about who they are, what they do and then tailor your presentation to these people. For example, think about what they really want to hear about as well as your skills and passion. Each person in your audience is there for a reason, it’s your job to find out why and make sure they’re impressed.

Get To The Point

Try and create a consistent theme throughout your interview that helps to hold the entire presentation together. Whatever your main point or key idea is, make sure you turn it into a powerful sentence that you will use at the start and end of your presentation but make sure you steer clear of the old clichés your panel will have heard a hundred times before.

Structure It

As you were taught when writing a story at school, you need a clear start, middle and end. Begin by outlining the presentation, elaborate on this through the middle of the presentation and then summarise the ideas at the end. With structure you are making your presentation and message much clearer.

Start On a High

By starting your presentation with a good introductory speech you are setting the tone and expectations for your presentation. While it is important to learn your introductory speech off by heart, learn it naturally because speaking like a robot will not help your audience engage. Be you and you’ll soon build up a great rapport with your audience.

Take It Slowly

If you rush through what you have to say, people will miss the message and it will make you look nervous too. If you’re using slides give the audience a few moments to take in the slide before you start talking. While you may hate presenting and want it all to be over already, your interviewer can not know that.

Life’s A Stage

Perform your interview and presentation like an actor; project your voice to the audience, don’t slouch or fold your arms and don’t be afraid of arm gestures too. When presenting talk to the audience and not to your slides.

Does It Work?

If you’re using technical equipment then make sure it works; check what you will be using before your presentation and take a memory stick for use, but a CD or email as back up so you’ll look professional and prepared. If you’re using a white board or a flip chart then take spare pens so you know they work and won’t run out on you.

Close With Style

You need to end your presentation in style with a memorable statement or quote, but remember you will be asked questions. Answer these questions openly and honestly, don’t be afraid to admit if you don’t know the answer, instead say you will check and get back to them.

As with all interviews; confidence is key! Even if you don’t feel confident, by presenting in a confident manner you will soon feel more confident in yourself.
