Don’t Get Too Comfortable In Your Comfort Zone

Here at Aspire Cambridge we deal with lots of amazing candidates and our recruitment consultants have met numerous candidates over the years; each candidate will have a different reason for leaving their last job and some of the candidates may have been in their last job role a few months while others may have been in their current role for over 15 years.

Employers like an employee that is loyal to their business and believes in longevity and long service, but there is such thing as getting too comfortable in a role and there are many reasons that people can become set in their ways within a company.

These reasons could be;

  • Good pay
  • A comfort zone that is too comfortable and makes them fear something new
  • They are friends with their colleagues
  • They love their job
  • They live in an area where unemployment is high

When you have worked for the same employer for an ‘extended period of time’ you may find that searching for a new job can be very difficult. You will have to prove yourself all over again, maybe learn new ways and processes of doing things and get used to a new environment, new people and new way of working.

As a long term employee of a business you may have become used to regular salary increases and when looking for a new job you may need to look at a slight drop in your salary for the chance of a new adventure and something more challenging. It can often be the slight salary drop that makes employees stay with an employer, but there can be so many advantages and benefits to a new role at a different company that an employee can miss out by staying put.

We have seen many cases of people being paid far less by staying in their existing role than those that move roles every few years to gain more experience, skills and knowledge over the course of their career.

If you were a long-standing employee that has recently moved into a new company and feel you are struggling in your new role, you are not alone. We would recommend that you embrace the new changes and company culture and enter the new role with an open mind.

And remember, while it is a good idea to change roles and companies to gain new skills and experiences, it is also damaging if you change jobs too frequently; changing jobs every 6 months to a year does not look good on a CV and will not make you attractive to your potential employer.

Why not look at working with a recruitment consultant to help ensure that you take the best possible next step in your career with a company that matches your needs and experiences?
