Research from Glassdoor found that 67% of active and passive jobseekers believe that diversity is an important factor when selecting an employer to work for. While this may be high on the agenda for employees, it seems this is not the case for employers.

In fact the research from Glassdoor goes on to show that just 41% of senior managers are ‘too busy’ to implement diversity initiatives into their businesses. However 57% of employees feel that their employers should be actively seeking greater diversity in the workplace.

From our experience here at Aspire Cambridge we know that employers see diversity in the workplace as a good thing, but they just find it hard to implement. Going the extra mile to encourage diversity during recruitment can really pay off so it is important that more business owners and HR teams sit up and take notice.

You can improve diversity through your recruitment process by getting your employer brand right. Be clear and honest about what you can offer potential candidates, but also think about what more you can offer. For example, the more flexible and diverse the job position, the wider range of candidates you will attract to your business.

It is essential that, as an employer, your recruitment process does not discriminate. Accommodate those potential candidates that have different needs, think about different communication methods too. These will attract and appeal to a new pool of talent for your business.

You may want to consider applying for an accreditation in diversity too. This will indicate that you and your business have a commitment to diversity. This can really help attract potential candidates to your business, but will also be of interest to potential customers and clients as well.

It is important to remember that an inclusive working environment doesn’t just come from recruiting a diverse workforce. You also need to provide a healthy work environment that allows employees to flourish.

Make sure you have the right tools and training opportunities available to employees. This will help them be the best they can possibly be, and therefore offer the business and your clients more too.
