As you all know, starting a new job can be daunting. What do I wear on my first day? Will I get on with my colleagues? Then there’s the niggling insecurities…Can I actually do this? Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Well, I had no need to worry. About a minute after I walked in to the light, bright and modern aspire cambridge offices and was greeted by a desk covered in goodies, a lovely card and a light-up word box saying ‘welcome to aspire Claire’, my fears disappeared and I felt all warm and fuzzy inside.
Since then, I have met with numerous lovely clients from a variety of different sectors; I’ve secured my first brand new client and have become something of a LinkedIn expert. The reason I love being a HR Consultant is that I get to work with a variety of different businesses, from those that are just starting up, to larger more established companies. The clients are all super busy so have no time to worry about HR, and the feedback was always the same “thank god we have you; you really put my mind at rest”.
No two days are the same. This week I’ve advised on Flexible Working requests, Maternity Leave procedures, GDPR compliance, Occupational Health referrals, Appraisal processes and more. As a Generalist HR Consultant, it’s vital that I keep up to date with changing legislation, best practice and ensure that the advice I give has the client in mind at all times. Here at aspire, you don’t get generic, ‘this is what the policy says’ advice. Of course, policies are there for a reason, but it’s so important to treat employees as individuals and not just a payroll number. aspire’s ethos is ‘placing people first’ and we really do. We pride ourselves on our ability to build rapport and trust with clients.
This week has been busy, rewarding, the start of something very exciting and I am already looking forward to Monday! But first, I will head home this evening and pop open the prosecco to celebrate a fantastic first week with a great team. 2018 will be my year!
