The Equality Act 2010 replaced previous legislation (such as the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995) and ensures consistency in what employers and employees need to do to make their workplaces a fair environment and comply with the law.
Under the Act, it is unlawful to discriminate against people at work because of nine areas termed in the legislation as protected characteristics:

These policies will prevent certain employment situations such as a male being paid more than their female colleagues for doing the same job, interviews only being given to candidates of a certain age or sex, a person with a physical disability not getting a job within your company, new roles not being advertised internally, extra holidays for employees of one religion but not others or employees being ignored for promotions due to their sexuality, gender, age, religion or disability.
