Positive news for candidates, who are increasingly in demand as business confidence grows

The data provided by REC in December 2014 showed that ‘From February 2015 onwards a net balance of three quarters (75%) of employers plan to increase permanent headcount.’ This increase is up from 53% one year previously.

This growth in confidence should in turn present exciting opportunities for strong candidates who are already in high demand. Equally, it makes the challenge even tougher for businesses of attracting and retaining the very best people to achieve success.

These opportunities and challenges were reinforced in the report with 93% of UK hirers stating that they had ‘no spare capacity’ or only ‘a little’ if demand increased.

The report also showed that ‘there has been a 588,000 increase year-on-year in the UK workforce in August-October, to just shy of 30.8 million. Of these, 560,000 have a full-time role. Self-employment within the quarter fell slightly, by 29,000.’

Taking a temporary role continues to be a good step towards achieving a permanent role, with at least 59% of employers having made at least one temporary worker permanent.
