Camfed International are an international non-profit organisation based in Cambridge. Their primary focus is to tackle poverty and inequality in very poor rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting girls to go to school and succeed. Since 1993, their innovative education programmes have helped over three million students to attend primary and secondary school.

Camfed’s staging date for auto enrolment is 1st August 2016. Aspire Cambridge’s HR Consultant provided expert support to Camfed on auto enrolment, helping them to ensure their compliance and that everything is in place for this staging date.

Challenges

To assess and make recommendations on:

  • Eligibility of workforce for auto enrolment
  • Suitability of existing pension plan
  • Suitability of payroll process and software
  • Minimising the total cost of auto enrolment
  • Creating a communication plan
  • Maintaining records and ongoing compliance

Our Approach

Edwina Brewster, HR Consultant at Aspire Cambridge, met with our contact at Camfed to assess their workforce for eligibility. This assessment confirmed that all current employees are eligible for auto enrolment. Camfed already have a stakeholder pension scheme in place, which we hope can be recognised as a qualifying scheme, and all employees not currently on the scheme will be enrolling in a similar qualifying plan in the coming weeks.

Edwina reviewed the current pension plan and advised that some minor administrative changes needed to be discussed with the pension provider to meet the requirements of auto enrolment. A letter was prepared by Edwina for Camfed to send to their pension provider to clarify on this.

The next step was to review and make recommendations on the payroll process that will need to be developed in order to support pension auto enrolment.

Edwina also created a proposed communication plan and made recommendations on how to reduce the total cost of auto enrolment.
